I have a real problem with naming characters. Not only is it difficult for me, I just hate doing it. It seems as though I can never find one that fits. And it's important, too important to use some sort of arbitrary, random trick. People tend to have certain impressions of certain names; they seem to imply something about the personality of whoever has them. Finding a name that actually fits the personalities of my characters is therefore unfailingly arduous and bothersome. That having been said, if I really get stuck, this doesn't seem like such a bad technique to use, particularly for more minor characters.

That's an interesting technique. I'd try it if my characters were willing to go along with it, but they're the sort that pick their own names and refuse to be called by anything else.

I obsess over naming my characters. I love Behind the Name, but that site probably only fuels the obsession... Interesting article, though. I'll give it a try.

i tend to use either baby names or write an equal amount of first names and last names on an index card then draw them out of a hat then add them in my card file so i have a running tally of the characters. So the same names dont appear in all my stories.

I love to go to cemeterys. You can find some really cool ideas for names there...and maybe meet a friend or two.

I usually just write whatever comes to my mind when I first think of the character, and then plan much of the rest of the story according to the nationality of the character's surnames. This year, I'm setting the story in France because the name "Annette Bernardier" came to me for the first character I started working on.

I got my MC's name from seventhsanctum. I tried the census namer and his was first on the first list and that was that. I did look at others, but he refused, lol.

I haven't named my characters at all this year. I have images for them, though, and I usually glue the images for each character into separate character worksheets. I must get working on those shortly.
At the moment I'm editing last year's NaNo novel and it's pretty time-consuming. There just aren't enough hours in the day...

Interesting article! I usually just resort to baby name guides, but I'm going to have to try some of these sites out. They'll probably work a lot better.

At the moment I'm editing last year's NaNo novel and it's pretty time-consuming. There just aren't enough hours in the day... Names and titles are easy to me. I usually think of them long before I think of a plot. I do the image pasting as well. It is fun looking through mags or on the internet to find that perfect image of a character and/or setting. Sometimes I do it backwards and find wacked out pictures THEN come up with names, etc. Writing is just so fun!!!
You are right! Editing takes forever! I worked on my 2nd/3rd draft of my 2007 novel this summer. Nowhere near done. Sigh

Well since there is a thread about character names, have you guys picked yours yet? Or tell us when you have. I've decided to be cheesy this year and have nicknames for everyone. Probably makes it sound like a terrible novel but then the writing may be just that. It's all for my fun anyway so who cares, right?
FMC - Lydia Rhonda Marks aka Dream MMC - Vow 2nd Character - Big Sticks 2nd Character - Sketch
That's all I got for now.

Hooray for revival! Gotta love zombie threads. xBig Sticks is an interesting nickname, Laieanna. I tend to give a lot of my characters nicknames as well - it just seems more natural to me. Maybe because I'm never called by my full name, except by my mate Ritchie. And he gets weird stares from people round about us when he does. I'm writing a minimum of ten short (related) stories next month. So I've got quite a few main characters. ;D 1. Violador, MMC - Miguel; FMC - Ángel; FMC2 - Yu.2. Seeking Azrael, MMC - John "Crow"; FMC - Yu.
3. One Hundred Years, MMC - Kazuma; MMC2 - Kazuhiro "Hiro"; FMC - Elizabeth.
4. Talk to the Birds, A nameless couple just referred to as "bride/wife" and "groom/husband".5. Lone Chamois, MMC - Rémi; MMC2 - Pierre; FMC - Jeanne; FMC2 - Lucile.6. Dreaded Karma, MMC - Otieno; FMC - Afia; FMC2 - Sauda.7. Sombre Sakura, FMC - Tsugumi; FMC2 - Sethunya.8. Breathing Water, MMC - Valentín; FMC - Adora; 9. Son of Eros, MMC - Lucien; FMC - Amiee; FMC2 - Nona; FMC3 - Ana.10. Cherry Peony, MMC - Shigeaki "Shige"; FMC - Xiu.

I feel so out of it...what do all these acronyms mean? I get MC = main character, but what are MMCs and FMCs?
