My story has a lighthouse. In fact, it is set in a lighthouse. The problem is, I've never been to a lighthouse, there are no light houses around here (despite I do live on the coast :/ ) and I can't find anything decent on the web about them.
Anyone have any idea what exactly they are like? Like...is the lighthouse tower just solid mass with a spiral stair going around to a huge lamp? Or can there be room inside the tower?

Drazuki,
I've been to several lighthouses, most recently a couple of months ago. They're pretty solid structures (brick and mortar). Depending on the design you may/may not have a room at the entrance of the lighthouse. Most do not since there is the light keeper's house normally adjacent to the lighthouse itself. The lighthouse itself is mainly a set of spiral stairs that go up to the light lens and the wrap around balcony. Where you see windows, there is normally a landing/hovel where someone can look out (not really a room as you'd think of it). It's normally only big enough for a person or so to fit in. Think of it as a place to catch your breath. There's really not a lot of room inside the lighthouse, it's pretty close quarters.

There are several lighthouses in Washington State, including one in my hometown that I have been to several times. That lighthouse is a small one ( www.admiraltyhead.wsu.edu/) but it is actually one of our haunted places. You can see pictures of the house. It's a house with an adjoining tower. There's a landing midway up to rest on. There's enough room inside the tower for several people, but it would get crowded quickly. I would estimate this tower has a radius of about four feet or so. I have read that some lighthouses have rooms inside them, but Admiralty Head is very small and was used by the military for a long time. However, the one in nearby Mukilteo is very similar to ours in appearance. mukilteohistorical.org/ I have never seen a lighthouse with an actual room inside of it- that's for the adjoining lightkeeper's house. I guess it depends on the story. You can do what you like with your lighthouse. I hope these sites help you out in your research process. Feel free to ask more specific questions and I'll try to help you out.

I live in the Great Lakes region, so we have a number of lighthouses (as well as all sorts of legends and stories about them), and I agree with most of what was said above. However, I have a website that might be useful to you, it's www.lighthousefriends.com. I know it sounds a bit hokey, but it actually has some really good information on it.
