I usually listen to music when I'm writing and typically with it blaring in my ears. It helps me block out the stuff around me and zone into my story. Usually I stick with instrumental or foreign languages. I don't have any playlists, still living in the world of CDs. I do, however, tend to use winamp's radio feature (much like Pandora if you're unfamiliar with winamp). This year I might try a different approach. We got a fancy sound system for the tv and I think I need to make good use of it, it's five CD changer, and the almost 400 CDs I own and don't listen to enough. Fortunately my taste in music ranges in new age style so there will be plenty to listen to and not get to focused on the music itself.

I have assembled my GothNo playlist at last (was bound to happen, I can't stand silence). ;D
It's a mix of the Halloween-ish, the ethereal, the operatic, and the just plain creepy, and most everything on it has piano, violin, pipe organ, or some combination of all three, and includes... Malice Mizer, Candy Spooky Theatre, Onmyou-za, Buck-Tick, Schwarz Stein, Emilie Autumn, E Nomine (which is really creepy, as most of the "vocals" are just some old guy whispering in German, followed by a choir singing the chorus o_0;), plus the soundtracks from Castlevania, Death Note, and Descendants of Darkness. It is happy gothy-making. ^_^
I'm constantly adding to it as I think of more things that would qualify. In fact, I have a couple albums' worth of Gregorian chants, perhaps I'll throw those on it....

I'm the same way with adding to mine, but most of mine is just classical right now. I have another one of some other stuff, but the one I really like is all classical, mostly minor keys and angry stuff, so works well for the mood of the piece.
I also have one labelled "Pleasant" for the scenes that aren't scary/unhappy.

Right now, I have the album Shadow of the Raven by Nox Arcana. It's pretty much lyric-free and it's all music inspired by the works of Poe, so it's wonderful for "gothy-making" (thanks, Emma). However, "End Transmission" by AFI also influences my story, so I have to listen to that song every once in awhile.
I need more music though...

I ALWAYS use music, because I tend to have music stuck in my head anyways, so it's easier to have something playing OUTSIDE my head. I've been trying to play kinda creepy music during my longer writing sessions. Today it was the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack, and I was listening to the Amelie soundtrack the other day and thought that would work well too. Schindler's List works well for sad scenes too. ^_^ I'm a bit of a movie fan.

Today I have just tossed in Loreena McKennitt's The Book of Secrets & The Visit CD's as inspiration and background music. Not exactly haunting but ethereal and mystic nonetheless.

I always write to music. I listen to a variety of music when writing, but more often than not, I fall back on the old classical/instrumental music. Some of my favorites are Ravel's music from "Bolero", Rimsky-Korsakoff's "Dance of the Tumblers", anything by Mussorgsky, and Holst's Planets. I'm planning on making a specific GothWriMos playlist on playlist.com, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Mussorgsky did Disney's original version of Fantasia.

GOTHNO 2010 Right now I have Evanescenes as part of my playlist. I will also be turning on the home-typist program that turns my computer keyboard into an old typewriter or castanets! The noise inspires me to type faster! BTW Home Typist is a free download!

For this novel in particular I'm going with My Chemical Romance, Versailles, VAMPS, LM.C, the soundtracks to Phantom of the Opera, Repo! The Genetic Opera, the Nightmare Before Christmas, Beauty and the Beast (both the animated feature and the Broadway show), Final Fantasies XI and XIII, and whatever other random songs I have...maybe some techno or something. I have a very large collection of music of all genres, so you never know what my pop up in there.
And of course, the playlist is subject to change at a moment's notice...

Although this is my first time doing GothNo I have done NaNo for the last two years. I don't tend to make a playlist, just put stuff on shuffle, though I usually end up skipping loads because it doesn't fit my mood *sigh*
Maybe I should try to make some playlists and see how it goes

I imagine that I'll be spending October listening to AFI, Blaqk Audio, Placebo and the Used. They're my top favourite bands at the moment. My gosh, I don't even listen to these artists unless I get a particular urge to any more. I guess I've changed more in the last two years than I realised. I've just put together a five hour long playlist for GothNo and NaNo consisting of slow, romantic songs by Arashi, B2ST, Big Bang, D-NA, DBSK, Gackt, Golf-Mike, Jang Geun Seok, Jin Tae Hwa, Kanjani8, KAT-TUN, LANDS, Miyavi, Mr. Children and NEWS. A lot of them were in the four hour playlist I wrote to from September 2009 to April 2010. All of my writing has a dark flair to it but I believe I write best listening to pretty ballads; I feel it helps me to capture emotion better in my writing.
