So, this is my first time trying to write Gothic literature, and I've developed a bit of the basic plot already. I think it sounds like it'll be Gothic, but I am a bit worried about detouring. You see, I'm an organic writer, and the problem with that is that my plot never develops the way it is supposed to and has a tendency to take off. I'm going to try to control it, this time around, but... well... I'm still concerned.
Anyway, my working title (because I'm weird and it's the first thing I do when writing) will be "Aria of Lost Souls" and it'll take elements from the key game and the Opera from Final Fantasy VI.
Pretty much, there's an old manor/castle that two men stumble across one dismal night. It's very creepy and apparently wasn't supposed to be there. Anyway, the house is full of ghosts, the most prominent being a woman, Lady Marianne, who committed suicide after her lover was killed in war.
I think I want it to be a romantic mystery. I'm trying to think of a few more Gothic elements to add. I know the story will be dark, tragic, but I want it to be poetic and beautiful. Remember that when I say Romantic, I am talking about the literary term (ie, Frankenstein) not the trashy romance novels you can find at grocery stores.
My main character will probably be a romantic hero, very moody, sullen, and withdrawn.
Anyway, does it sound all right? Dark, moody, mysterious, set in a creepy castle, ghosts, etc. Should I change it?

Oh my god I love that Opera! Nobou Uematsu is such a genius.
...and really, the 8bit music mimicking opera singing is so COOL.
(...Kefka FTW >> )
Personally I think it is a wonderful idea, and I'd read it. I love the title too. It sounds like you're meshing the opera with the ghost train, huh?
Okay, so the main character is a romantic hero, but what about this other man?

Thanks! I actually checked out the list of Gothic novels that Lily posted, and I found Frankenstein on it, so I guess the Romantic ideas really are a part of Gothic literature. Yay! Kefka owns all, even Mama's Boy. *Sticks tongue out at Drazuki's Icon* Hehe. I love Seph too, but Kefka is WAY cooler. Anyway, I know that Marianne's story is definetely going to follow Maria's in the Opera, only a bit less with the helpless maiden thing going on. There's a Romeo and Juliet thing going on in the story where Marianne takes destiny into her own hands. So, to replace the helpless female role which will not be going to my only female main character, I've given that role to the other man. I mentioned I was going to combine elements of the Key Game into my writing (even though it's pretty archaic and I'm probably the only one who knows about it). The other one will be a former key who is romantically involved with our moody hero. He's naive, sweet natured, and everything a Romantic Heroine is supposed to be- except male. He's also got some serious issues in his head. So, recap of characters then! I now have a Romantic Hero who will probably want to abandon Marianne at the first chance he gets. There's the gentle Key who is naturally a good person and really wants to help Marianne and solve her mystery. And then there's Marianne the ghost who senses foul play involved and needs someone living to help her sort out the issues surrounding her and her lover's deaths. This could be fun. XD

XD on the cosplay thing. Have you seen the Kefka cosplayer, CJ? He's amazingly funny.
Homosexual circles, you know!
And here's a longer one, with more content. *Dies*
It's so amusing. I was very much impressed by his Kefka-ness and his ability to annoy everyone around him.
Okay, I'm done being off topic, for the moment, at least.

I'm not familiar with the Key Game or the Opera in Final Fantasy so I'm probably missing a lot of the flavour, but everything else sounds just about spot-on for a gothic novel with a difference.

KT-- Awesomeness! I think he'd be a great person to know. His skits were so funny! Bella-- Thanks! The Opera of FFVI is one of my favorite video game scenes of all time. I was five when I saw the scene the first time, and I still love it today. As for the Key Game, well, it was popular back in 2004 and 2005, and I stumbled across it sometime in the mid 2007 area and became entranced, but the site closed down way back in 2006 and hasn't updated since then. www.ravenswing.com/~keys/index.html It's tricky to explain, but some of the stories, like "The Willow Key" and "The Gargoyle Key" are pretty good. Some are pretty unusual. Anyway, you may want to exercise caution if you decide to check it out, since the site does contain graphic homosexual artwork and writing (everything is hidden behind links with warnings about the content rating, thankfully). Anyway, I don't want to give the whole plot away, but the fact that my traditional heroine role is filled by a former key is an important part of the story. ~.^
