 All about gothnowrimo
« Thread Started on Jul 27, 2008, 7:26am »

Every October, we will try and write a certain amount of words of a gothic novel. The main emphasis is on gothic literature (hence the goth in gothnowrimo) however others may choose to write something else of a similarly dark nature.

The goth is not the same term used in relation to goth rock music. That is something different. This is gothic literature we are talking about.
I will post some links shortly, on what exactly gothic literature is.

We have several wordcount goals set up, ranging from 20k - 70k. Pick one, and then be on your merry dark way!

RULES

1) It must be a new piece of fiction.

2) It must fall under gothic literature, or atleast have some aspect of gothic literature as it's theme or style

3) Pick a wordcount goal and do what you can to reach it!

4) Respect everyone in the forum, and follow all the rules of this forum in regards to abuse, respect, spamming, etc.

5) Enjoy yourselves immensely

Hi! I have a question. I've had a story brewing in my head for some time now, but I'm not sure if it's exactly "gothic." It's a vampire story, but it takes place in modern times in a big city, not in a castle. My main setting, though, is a nightclub, that could be in an old building with hidden passages, etc., and I actually think it would be fun to make it look and feel like a castle. There will definitely be a "damsel in distress." Do you think this could qualify as "gothic"? If so, I might like to give it a whirl in October.

Thanks!

You can find the different genres here on the genres board: http://gothnowrimo.proboards.com/index.cgi#genres

And here is a post where I've included some resources that I came across about gothic literature and elements that you might be interested in including in your story.

And if you're looking for any inspiration, there might be something to tempt you in the list below:

Reading material:

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Castle of Wolfenbach by Elizabeth Parsons

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

Romance of the Forest by Ann Radcliff

The Antiquary by Sir Walter Scott

The Lifted Veil by George Eliot

The Monk by Matthew Lewis

The Vampyre by John Polidori

Gothic Short Stories by David Blair (Ed.), Wordsworth Editions, 2002

In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan Le Fan, Wordsworth Editions, 1995

Ghost Stories of Henry James, Wordsworth Editions, 2001

(You can find a lot of these on Manybooks.net or at Project Gutenberg.)

Films:

The Haunting (1963)
Directed by Robert Wise, starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn

Rebecca (1940)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine

The Innocents (1961)
Directed by Jack Clayton, starring Deborah Kerr (based on Henry James’s The Turning of the Screw)

The Changeling (1979)
Directed by Peter Medan, starring George C. Scott

Dragonwyck (1946)
Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, starring Gene Tierney and Vincent Price

Rare Literature Publishers:

Valancourt Books

From your post it sounds like the nightclub is the modern day equivalent of the haunted house. Best of luck with your project!

I have a question. I've noticed the designations under the user Id's, baby bat and so on. What do they mean and how do they change. Also what's up with the karma thing?

The designations under the name change as your post count increases. i.e. from 1-24 posts = Baby Bat; 25-60 = Dark Child; and so on.

The karma is just a way for someone who appreciates your help or comments to say thank you ('cos we hope there's no smiting going on! ;) ) But it doesn't affect how you move around the boards or anything. It's just a way of receiving ratings.

Does this help?
